Chapter 6, Managing Time and Money, Oct. 1-7

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text. For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

For your second post, read another student's post and make a comment about it.  Sometimes it is helpful to read about other students' goals and how they are managing to accomplish them.    The first post can be longer and the second one can be shorter.

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it. My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful. Then I taught the topic for 30 years. I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text. I found myself distracted by things around the home. I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores. Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal. I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do. It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks. I still found it difficult to get started. I used the idea of a leading task. I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write. Then I would refine the writing the next day. Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written. Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country. The CollegeScope material is my latest project. Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it. Now it is your turn. Tell about something you accomplished in the past or something you hope to accomplish in the future. See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.

  1. One of my lifetime goals is to do well in school and get a good paying job that I enjoy. I want to be financially stable so that I can travel the world for a little while then maybe start a family. Since I’m not working right now I have all the time in the world to focus on school and get A’s, of course, I do get distracted sometimes. A lot of the times, recently, I come home from school and relax and unwind right away. I really prefer to get all the work done and relax knowing I’ve been productive. Like you said, Professor, I really just need to rearrange my tasks and work towards my goal first.

    1. By in large, most people certainly do wish to pursue in a career that keeps you financially stable. Since you're in school right now you have time to think what you would like to do and prepare for it. Keep in mind that life is going to hit you fast and you're going to think to yourself "What am I doing with my life," I know I have. Try new things, expand your social circle, meet new people, build new relationships, and most importantly get out there.

    2. I liked your post Kristen. I too want to have a good financial situation that will allow me to travel. It is really important to cultivate experiences during lie. I consider traveling to be towards the top of the list of things that we have the most to gain from and grow as an individual. Not to mention the sheer joy we gain from it. Through actual exploration comes exploration of one's self. I do not know if you have considered it but it worries me that once I have a good paying job that will give me the funds to travel I wont then have the time to do it. I just hope that we will both still have some sort of availability in our lives so that we will be able to take trips. You are doing the right thing in putting your best effort into school because that is the only way that you will attain whatever that financial stability is that you desire. Keep up the good work and I will point out that this is no fantasy, it is a more than feasible goal. Good Luck!

  2. I know how you feel Professor Fralick it’s easy to get distracted by things, especially other things that are good for you, like exercising. It’s better to focus a lot of attention on a goal when completing it, rather than jumping around and just going through the motions. It’s all about making small sacrifices along the way until you succeed and hopefully it will be worth it in the end. You might not get the chance to have a nice breakfast or read the paper for a little while but I’m sure it was worth it the finish what you started and end up with a quality book.

  3. Before I pass away into the heavens, as my carcass deteriorates and slowly decomposes, I would like to create my own book based on my life. It will not be primarily written for public entertainment, instead I want to write a book that explains who I am, what I did, why I do certain things, and my thoughts behind certain actions; it's basically an accumulation of many written diary notes. Another life time goal I wish to achieve is to be able to create a lucrative and profitable construction company that I can call it my own. I have a mentor that teaches me the basic knowledge and fundamentals that I need to know however I am a full time student and I want to keep up with my social life. I want to keep in touch with all my friends and hangout however I cannot do that if I wish to focus in school and while interning. I must prioritize my choices. So far this year I was able to cut my social life and focus on school and interning. I am currently a full time student and I intern 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Instead of meeting new friends, I have built a camaraderie among other contractors and companies. Sure it has been difficult however I must keep up with my priorities in order to achieve my goal.

    1. I think that is awesome how you want to write a book that is about your life. I could only imagine how that would feel reading it one day and reminiscing about your thoghts and actions you've have taken in the past. On your second note, I too would like to keep my social life, but I also go to school full time which has taken up most of my time. I agree with you in that you must sacrifice the things that you enjoy in order for you to accomplish your goals.

    2. First thing Mr. Moo I love how you started your paragraph. Secondly I was thinking of the same idea of writing a book based on your life, because it might be a unique book to write and state your thoughts and actions and I wonder how it would feel like to read such a book.

    3. Nice use of diction and imagery. I too like the idea of an autobiographical sort of diary. It would be interesting to see what an average joe, such as yourself, would write about in life and what you have experienced.

  4. My overall lifetime goal is to finish school with a Masters Degree and a well paying job, but one of the goals that I have chosen to share is to volunteer in the Peace Corps. The basic requirements that I can remember are a certain amount of community service hours and a BA associated with any major. The process of achieving those smaller steps in order to be accepted in the peace corp alone will call for all of the major points that was discussed in Chapter 6. Time management, and financial management. The peace corps will take up about 2 years of my life and that is a large commitment. In order to become secure with that situation, I have to have a secure amount of money saved up in order to come back home and still be able to stand on my own two feet. Also, I have to make sure to plan out the time that it will take to commit to community service, school and work. I believe that I can do it with the consistent reminder of personal goal in life.

  5. My lifetime goal would be to graduate from college. I would like to become either a physical therapist or technician. Becoming a physical therapist i would need a bachelors degree first. A physical therapist is a reward career and it will also take patience and time. If i would become a technician i would need an associate degree. Either therapist or technician would both be rewarding. Time management would be something i would have to learn more about . Earning a degree takes time and it is important to know that it is not a race to accomplish a goal for the future. I plan on continuing my studies and earn a degree. If i come across a roadblocks, I will stay positive and find ways on solving them.

  6. One of my lifetime goals is to write a book that will touch people. This is going to be something that will take a lot of time to complete. I will have to set more than just time aside in between work and school. I will have to dedicate entire days to writing so that I will not stunt the creative process. I will set aside a minimum of thirty minutes a day to tend to writing and brainstorming. Then I will set aside one day a week where I will stay home and do nothing but work on the book. Even if there are fun things going on I have to stick to that assigned day every week until I complete this project. If i falter and start switching the day because of certain things going on then I will surely fall into a routine of it. The biggest obstacle I have is my tendency to get distracted. To ensure I do not waste my time being aimless and playing around I will stay in my room. There is no television in there or a computer for that matter. I will also turn my phone off on the days that I will be writing. I will make sure that all the things that I waste time with are unavailable to me.

    1. It's very cool that you want to write a book, and I think that your methods of accomplishing this goal are very good, practical, and realistic. I can imagine that writing a book would be a very daunting task. Writing thirty minutes a day is a great idea; that way, you are in the habit of doing it. I agree that being in a room with no distractions is the way to go. There are so many distractions with all the technology available.

  7. One of my lifetime goals is to become a labor and delivery nurse. I have had four children, and I recognize the vital role a labor and delivery nurse has on a family's experience in the birth of their child. I distinctly remember what all my nurses were like. Almost all were sweet, and I definitely remember that one that wasn't very nice! I'd love to help make a very nice memory and experience for other families. Like many other academic programs, a major obstacle to this goal is that nursing programs are very impacted. There are many other smaller goals that I need to accomplish in order to become a labor and delivery nurse. Because the academic programs are so impacted, it is very important to do well in school in prerequisite courses so that you can be accepted. The way I do this is I plan ahead when choosing courses to take. I do not take all the easy courses at once, because I do not want to end up having to take Microbiology along with Anatomy one semester because I've taken everything else! Having four children, it is vital that I schedule study time, or it just won't happen. I live by the motto "Work first, play later". So I do my studying and coursework before doing things like watching movies and such. Also, "mommy guilt" can be a huge obstacle to studying and getting work done. I mean, no mom wants to feel like she is always telling her kids that she has to study. What I do about this is I plan an activity to do with the kids, and plan specifically how I will make up for it in study time. This method works very well for me.

  8. One of my lifetime goals is to research space travel. A growing problem today is overpopulation. Soon we will run out of space and resources to be sustained and unless we can begin colonizing space, we will lose a lot of lives. Probably it would be our future generations doing the suffering and even though they aren't alive, we should make it better for them. I always wanted to make a difference, and hopefully Chemistry will help me do that. I just want to be a part of the work on the legacy of our species. If I don't quite make it that far, maybe I can work on a way to improve the earth's environment. Some college classes I still need to take will be huge obstacles, but I promised myself to dedicate how much time I need to passing those classes. I divide all the work I need to do as evenly as possible over the course of my free time and just do it each day before I have time for whatever I want to do.

  9. One of my lifetime goals is to graduate from college and become a succesful engineer in the field i enjoy. With receiving this degree comes with a lot of time and devotion to work. I know it wont be easy, but this is a goal that will affect my future, so i will do what i can to acheive it. With regards to becoming an engineer, i am going to need a lot of education and experience. My goal next year is to apply for engineering internships where i will be able to learn and develop skills that are similiar to my career choice. I must remain focus with my education first by overcoming many distractions that i deal with on a daily basis. Social networking is my biggest concern for i need to deactivate them and leave it for my rewarding time after a long day of studying or accomplishing something. Changing little habbits is key to overcoming anything, so i'll take things day by day in acheiving it.

    1. Dylan, I understand where you are coming from. I too would like to become an engineer. I also feel like I have too many distractions. This unfortunately cuts into my study time and overall hurts my goals. I feel like I have to start looking at the big picture instead of what is going on now. I feel like sense I have this goal college might be a little easier because now I have a direction to go in. I hope you the best in becoming whatever kind of engineer it is you would like to be.

    2. While looking at the future is commendable, be careful not to get too wrapped up in it and lose your sense of what is happening in the now. John Lennon once said "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans."

  10. One of my life time goals that I wish to accomplish is getting my bachelors degree in business administration. It’s been my passion ever since I was a kid to wear a suit and run a big business under my own rules. But getting there would take enormous time and skill but it will pay off with knowledge and skill. Managing my time won’t be a problem because am always on time, all I need is to make sure that my plan that is set in place would get me satisfied for the future because I know I am going to have to change some plans so it could work out.

I always find myself waiting until the last minute to do stuff. But, with some of the information I learned from this week I think my time management skills will improve. I have already started using my planner a little more and it already feels like I'm getting better. I plan on getting another calendar to hang in my room so I have an idea of what is planned for the month and then I can refer to my planner for weekly events.

  14. My goal in life is to be successful, happy, and to give my son the best life I can. The way I can do those things are one, finish college, two, get a good job, and three, make the best decision I can. I need to learn how to be more organized, learn how to use my time wisley. I usually get distracted very easily, when I say i'm going to do this for ten minutes, I end up doing it for an hour. Everything distracts me, I procrastinate too much, I normally think that I have more time than I really do and then before I know it, it's the end of the week. I just need to push myself more, get on track with my schooling, look more into jobs. But with my time managment skills, I did get two calendars, one for my bag and one on my wall so I become more organized and so it's easier for me to see what has to be done by a certain time.

From what I have read from my professor is to do what is most important first, get what needs to be done out of the way, so that you can enjoy the rest of your days without being stressed about doing everthing last minute.

Everyone has at least three or four goals to achieve,I am one of those people who has some aims and I really want to get them. One of my lifetime goal is to finish my school with good grades in order to get a good paying job that I deserve.I want to be a social worker and this goal makes me under pressure sometimes. I learned from this chapter the managing time and money is a very important thing to do especially when somebody has tasks to make them done.Of course I am facing many obstacles also I expect to face more during my life, yet I have to learn how I would overcome them and focus on what I am trying to achieve.

According to Kourtney ball, I agree with her we need to stay balanced on our time and really become more organized so we can be strong and face whatever the case in life is.

My most important lifetime goal is being the best father that i can be for my son. my parents got divorced when i was young and my father wasnt around much growing up. i never want to put my kid through that. i can use my time management skills to ensure that i always carve out time to spend with my son. i can do this by taking advantage of the time he is asleep or in preschool to accomplish the majority my homework. later in life when i look for a job, i can narrow my search to jobs that dont have much travel, allow me to work a set schedule, or allows me to work from home. i can also properly manage my money so that i am not forced to take a job that doesnt meet my personal requirements because i am in need of financial stability.

I will always make sure to have the appropriate funds to spend on any classes that are necessary for advancement in my chosen major. In order to do this I will set aside a set amount of money each month, also I will make sure that when I spend money I spend my money wisely. to manage my time I will set specific days which I will work on each subject that I have. the other time management technique I will use is ensuring that I study two hours for every one hour of class that I have I will do this to ensure success in collage no matter what it takes.

  19. My career goal is to become an RN and work in a hospital. My career goal is my lifetime goal. My career requires a bachelor's degree and a certification for nursing. I am interested in having a family later in life when I become an RN, so I would have a reliable and steady income. As for my social goals, I will still be in contact with my close group of friends, and hopefully still be coaching (if I have time). My three most important life time goals are to become a respected RN, have a family I can support, and my close friends to share the rest of my life with. The first step in accomplishing this goal is to finish college. Some additional steps are to work in a hospital environment, because when being hired, they want a nurse with experience, such as a CNA. I can motivate myself to accomplish this goal by seeing how it will be one of the top jobs in the future. Lastly, my career will also help me with my other lifetime goals.

    1. Interesting post. I too wish to enter the medical field and obtain a excellent, respectable career. I feel that in order to reach such a goal, motivation and dedication are a requirement. I for one am often mesmerized by all the opportunities one can gain by simply entering the medical, but fearful that I'm not doing enough to get there. That's where time management ties in. It's important to focus on what you need to do, get it done, and map out the next day so that it's as successful as the previous one. I believe that by doing so, there is no question that your goals will be met, and a sense of accomplishment (which is the goal i've selected) will develop. Furthermore, it's nice to read that someone else shares similar interests as I.

  20. One of my lifetime goals is to become a paralegal and start a family. I have been finding a hard time to fit in my school, work, and soccer. Soccer takes up a lot of time and so does school. I have a part-time job on the weekends, and that takes up a lot of time that could be used studying. I need to learn to manage my time better by scheduling the times I can study, since I can't change the times I have soccer or work.

  21. One of my lifetime goals is to obtain a sense of accomplishment later in life. I want to be able to reflect on all that I’ve done and be pleased with the overall outcome. With that being said, lots of different things are required in order for me to achieve such a feeling. A couple of the requirements would be the completion of college (including medical school), and landing a successful career that I’m happy with (possible surgeon). I realize sense of accomplishment caries from each individual, but for me, it serves as a evaluation of your overall satisfaction with your life thus far. On the subject of reaching lifetime goals, time management is something that is crucial. Some of my personal time managing techniques include a schedule and completing work ahead of time. I find it extremely valuable to be able to map out how much time you have to complete your daily activities. Like many people, I tend to fall victim to procrastination from time to time. Sometimes I find myself too exhausted to keep going when I don’t have to, and sometimes tend to hold things off until they absolutely have to be done. This is one of my many weaknesses when it comes to managing time, as I’m often unsure when exactly my laziness will kick in. Nevertheless, time management is an extremely useful tool that I feel will benefit me on my quest of gaining a sense of accomplishment.

  22. My ultimate lifetime goal is to be able to raise my children in a good environment. There are a lot of smaller goals to achieve this including finishing school, getting a good paying job and of course, starting a family. To attain these goals, it is essential for me to use good time management. Some techniques I will need to use are to make smaller, more attainable goals to focus on daily. Procrastination is the biggest issue that stands in my way currently. When reading, all of the reasons for procrastinating sounded all too familiar to me. This being the case, I know that I need to change that habit quickly in order to make good progress on becoming who I want to become.

  23. One of my lifetime goals is to graduate from a University. For me this is a big deal, because I would be the first in my family to graduate from a University. I am the second oldest in my family, unfortunately my older brother did not finish college. Although there is nothing wrong with that, I feel like it is up too me to go all the way through college not only for the benefit for my self but to give my parents the pleasure of having one of their children graduate from a University but also, to be a role model for my younger brothers. I would like for them to look up too me and follow in my steps. With my managing skills I will make sure that I manage my school work and social life in the right way, by doing my school work first and then attending any social events. I will devote my time and effort to school to make sure that first I transfer from community college to a university and then I will devote my time and effort to finishing my study's ( for Registered Nurse) at the college of my choice. If there are any obstacles in my way I will just push myself through that obstacle, keeping in mind the reasons of why I'm doing it and the outcomes from me doing it.

It sounds like you have a good idea of where you want to go in life, and you are setting yourself a difficult but not unattainable goal, which is very worthy of recognition. I would not be able to become a nurse; it is a calling in life to want to help people that way. You are also making an important statement for yourself in your family and among your peers; that you value education and you expect yourself to succeed. Go Angelica! ;)

Now that I have taken the time off and finish wasting time trying to figure out what I want out of life, I have exercised my mind to know that I want to write a 4 book series and 2 other novels as just a start in my young writing career. I always loved reading love stories as well as scary stories as well. I also know that I want my books to target the younger generations of be in the parameters of "young adult" books. I’ve always loved thinking with new ideas and having written a movie or screenplay. I was always stirred in the wrong direction; but I’m willing to go forward with my life long dreams as well as take the creative writing classes to get the better juices running. I want to be able to have my books read everywhere and on everything. Books are going out of style, but iPads and Kindles will make my dream become life.

  26. One of my lifetime goals is to become a mother and have a family with my husband. I know I want to graduate from college and hopefully join the Math For America program to gain a teaching position in San Diego in order to make enough money to start a family. This means I need to pass this semester and next in order to transfer to SDSU and earn my degree in the next two years. My husband is trying to join the San Diego Sheriff's Academy and he expects to become a deputy in the next two years. Between his education and mine, we are looking at a minimum of two years before we gain meaningful employment. We also need that time to make a home of our own, which involves a lot of saving and financial planning. We would need time to prepare ourselves for becoming parents by educating ourselves about parenting. Because I teach at a preschool, I try to take experiences from work as lessons about early childhood in discipline, playtime, naptime, teaching reading, writing, and number recognition and counting, mealtime, explaining and introducing different topics, hygiene, and many other important factors. So many of these lessons I have learned in a recent and short amount of time, so I can only imagine the abundance of information I have yet to learn about parenting and understanding child development. This is why I want to give myself much more time before I become a parent, but I know I want to be working towards my goal during that time.
