Chapter 8, Taking Notes, Writing and Speaking, Oct. 15-21

This week read the chapter on taking notes, writing and speaking and then make two comments on any of these topics:

Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?

Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writer’s block. Read the section on writer’s block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.

Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

Ask a question or discuss any aspect of college success that is relevant to your college experience at this point.

I need to be selective about how and where I allocate my time. I need to consider what’s most important and ask myself how or if something applies to my future and my goals. If it doesn’t affect my big picture or won’t bother me a couple weeks from now, I should overlook it and move on. We waste time and energy on things that are so insignificant and sometimes we’re so distracted that the things that need immediate attention get overlooked.

Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

To be a better note taker I intend to only write down what’s important and especially the things the teacher says will be on the test or the things she writes on the board. I intend to question myself about the material I’m learning and try to connect it to something else I know. I’ll try and be selective about what’s important to know and what the main ideas are. Anticipating test questions will also help me know what to write down and study later.

  2. "Ask a question or discuss any aspect of college success that is relevant to your college experience at this point."

It is very important for students to take ownership of their own success in college. Their grade is not dependent upon how well they like the subject or how much they believe that the instructor likes them, but rather they control how well they will do in the class. It is important to attend every class unless you absolutely cannot. Purposing to take an interest in the class is also a great way to be successful. As the text stated, sitting as front and center as possible will help so much to keep you focused, especially when taking a subject that is not as much "your thing". Taking notes will also help you to not only pay attention in class, but will also help you to be able to review important information later.

"Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker."

I remember when I was a sixth grader, I would literally furiously write down EVERYTHING my science teacher said; it was ridiculous! I knew no other way, though. I still at times can have a hard time with taking down TOO much detail, so I found the ideas listed in the text useful. I will listen for the signal words to pick out the main ideas, examples, etc. This will allow me to take notes and organize them effectively. It is also frustrating to feel as if I am not keeping up with the instructor, so I will try to abbreviate more when taking notes. For me, the Cornell format works best, because it is the easiest for me to review. I like being able to cover up answers and test myself from them, and this format is the easiest to do that with. I do not like the mind map. It just looks too disorganized to me.

  3. Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writers block. Read the section on writers block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.

Reading the text from writers block i learned a couple of things. I find myself at times struggling with writers block. I usually have writers block when Im force to write an essay in class. I usually first start with my main idea then start brainstorming. My professor showed us ways to brainstorm and use a web of ideas. Some people have writers block and don't know what ways to over come it. I think starting off with brainstorming helps a lot when it is time to write the final draft.

At times when i have a test that is coming up i sometimes don't really know how to use good study techniques. When my professor is giving a lecture i make sure to find out what the main idea is. Once i find the main idea i highlight important parts that he/ she tells us what is going to be on the test. At times i write down everything they say ,yet, in the chapter it says that it isn't the best idea. Also, i study my notes after each lecture to know what is being taught.

When I have writers block I tend to want to go out and look and see things. I really like the beach because the sounds ease my mind and make me think clearer. I also like to be able to see interaction with others as well since the things I like to write about the most involve people and their interactions with others.
You also have to learn how to walk away from the project in some circumstances. When you overwhelm yourself with the pressure of finishing a paper or a chapter, you tend to not think as clearly or as smoothly as you write. Therefore needing more and more edits to make sure the writing is running smoothly.

To become a better writer, I want to learn new words and to expand my vocabulary more and more each day. I want to be able to write with better language and be able to make my sentences sound smoother to readers that I try to reach. In order for me to do this I will need to read a little more than I am already doing. In order for me to learn better language, I also need to read different writing languages. Learning more writing languages will help me write as a well-rounded writer as well as be able to creatively write freely and endlessly

  5. Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?

Being selective in life can be a great benefit. Knowing what is important and being able to establish your priorities will allow you to spend your time in more effective ways. I used to think that every time my friends went out, i had to go out with them. I didnt want to miss anything that might have happened. Now i realize that there are more important ways to spend my time and that i dont have to attend every social outing or gathering. Staying home and working on my schoolwork is required sometimes and is more important in the long run.

In school, being selective with what you write down in your notes can make you a better student and help you study well. Writing down everything the instructor says can create too much clutter. being able so identify the important from the unimportant will allow you to study what you need.

  6. Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.
Becoming a good writer requires many steps to follow. According to this chapter, I have learned many important ideas that are helpful. First, reading articles very carefully to come out with a good introduction and a variety of ideas to support my writings. Citation is the main factor and we, as note takers, we should take the main idea of the article or story. In my opinion note taking is the practice of recording information captured from another source. We have to free our mind from having to recall everything. Notes don't have to be a whole full page, it it just has to be something that when you read your notes you can understand them very well.
Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?
Each of us has the potential for being a genius, not if we were lumped together and tested on the same body of facts, but if we are able to gather our strongest features and we then strategically on tasks that we choose. Trough our lives we have to pose at some important points, sometimes we might make wrong choices , but we have to learn how to fix them and being more selective people instead , so we can avoid repeating those mistakes once again .

  7. many people get writers block once and awhile and that's ok some intention statements would be to become a better note taker and pay more attention during lecture. when you are starting of your paper it is vital to have a good topic sentence so that you can base your ideas off of that. next comes a strong body for the essay, you need three main points and show support for those main points so that is has a nice sophisticated flow to the essay. the concluison is always the hardest because you don't always know what to write at the end of your essays. for that the conclusion is just a restatement on what the topic sentence was taking about . once you read over and look at your mistakes and learn from them , they will virturally be impossble to make again

There are many essential points help the students to be a good writer such as studding grammar and learn to use academic vocabulary when you write context about any idea .studding grammar is main points and help you to use right tens for verbs. Also using academic vocabulary give the reader impression that your context is very interested. In addition using right vocabulary in the position is very important that came from getting experience by reading book and novel.

Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writers block. Read the section on writers block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.

When I have writers block for reading always I used brainstorming and Cornell note to reduce the size of book when I have a big book to read it by understand the main idea and important points in the context. These things help me to understand the book very easy and review it quickly by short time.

  9. Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?
I consider a recipe selectivity of the important qualities in the people. With selectivity we can choose what they Fits with our interests and ignore what we do not benefit him. The simplest example about selectivity is listening to particular lecture we should not jot down everything an instructor says, but pick and choose what is important and helpful to get important information. The existence of selective reduced chaos.

Writing is transfer thinking with words from one mind to another. Writing usually gaining by practice, to become a better writer, the most important thing before writing I have to read the articles very carefully and write draft summaries. I have to choose the best words expressive, the ability to organize my thoughts. If I follow these steps and rehearsed many times the final result will be a good writer for an introduction and comprehensive summary carry all the details

  10. Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

Some important intentions I will do while taken notes is that write down only the main points with details. Because I usually write down everything that is being said by the teacher and what is on the reading, to improve it I just need to focus on the main points. Also instead of having a full paragraph on one main point I would rather write down one sentence for each main point to make it clear to understand when I go back to study.

Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?

Everyone is considered a genius in this world the person just has to use their brains to become a genius. Taken important steps to be successful in school or outside you need to look at the “big picture” like it stated in the chapter. As I am student just like millions of others I choose the most important tasks and classes and how will they affect my life, because every person wants to go down the road without any hard bumps ahead. I choose what fits me the most and what fits my personality the most and work towards these tasks.

  11. “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook”

    -William James

When people think of the term “genius”, they tend to automatically associate it with someone who excels at the more difficult subjects such as mathematics and science. However, people often fail to realize that the term can be applied to anyone who excels in their passion. Whether it is an artist in pottery or poet in the local poetry club, brilliance can be found if you look hard enough. I think the concept of “taking steps toward being a genius” alludes to the idea that one may need to discover their inner genius. I would assume that the process of doing so would be different for everybody, and it all depends on how they choose to go about it. I personally want to enter the medical field and excel at it, which means that I would have to devote large portions of my time in order to get there (i.e. schooling). Another route I would take to discover my inner genius (not trying to sound pompous), would be devoting additional time to volunteer work. I’m a firm believer in hands on experience, and want to be as well prepared as possible when I do get to where I want to be in life.

“Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker”.

Personally, I feel that I have always been a good writer so I’m going to talk about what I intend to do to become a better note taker. Note taking is often over looked by many (including myself), due to the fact that it’s just jotting down information you are being taught. However, notes are extremely valuable in the future when you don’t have your instructor in front of you or you are cramming for a test. I for one struggle at taking good notes because I often fail to process the information being said while I’m writing it. Thus, my notes become an enigma when I go to review them and I’m left with a paper full of words (with the exception of math). I intend on structuring my notes so that they are not only legible, but also informative. I need to be able to pinpoint what I’m looking for when I’m stumped on what to study, and being able to do just that would help tremendously.

  12. Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?

Being selective at school is a main factor with managing your time and school work. This differs between what is important and what is unimportant. When you are able to differentiate between school and other things, it will benefit you in the long run of procastination becasue you didnt set asside things to help you accomplish something. When i receive an assignment for school, i try my best in making sure that it is all about that assignment and getting as much done that meets my expectations before doing anything else like hanging out with friends. But nobody is perfect for it takes time to adjust and make this a habbit.

Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

To become a better writer and note taker, i intend to list and write down main points from a lecture and not every single word being said. I also intend to review my notes immediately after lecture and distribute the studying throughout the semester. When taking notes, i am often not engaged and in it for i will make sure to be awake and energized with a little meal or snack so that i am at full concentration of the lecture.

  13. Selectivity leading to success

It is important to be selective because it allows you to focus on what is important. Being selective is a way of prioritizing. It is a way in which we can give attention to the things that matter the most given the situation and context. If I have an important term paper and a large homework assignment that are due the next day than I need to be selective with my actions. I can not deviate from those tasks and do things like watch television, waste time on the computer, or hang out with friends. If I want to be successful I must be selective and not allow any of those distractions be what I put my energy into. In any situation being selective goes hand in hand with time management. If I want to be successful in things like my occupation, entrepreneurial ventures, and learning skills or knowledge, than I must put my focus in to completing those things. If I spread myself too thin and allow myself to lose focus on the most important tasks at hand than I will be getting in the way of my own success. I must select the things in the moment that I know are right for me.

I intend to become a better writer by...

I mainly want to improve how I prepare my papers. To ensure my success, I will begin the writing process well in advance before the deadline. If I wait until the deadline approaches my work will surely be rushed and the quality will suffer. I first need to spend more time brainstorming my ideas, I tend to just dive right in. If I brainstorm, I will come up with a wide variety of things that I want to complete in my paper. In the end, this extra time spent on cultivating all of my ideas will give me a more efficiently done paper. I want to start making clear outlines of my paper. This outline is going to make my paper clean and concise. I want the structure of my paper, transitions and all, to be correct and fluid. The outline is key because having a great structure to your paper will make all the difference in how captivating it is. Good organization is key and I want to spend as much time ass possible organizing my ideas. The content is just as important as the design of the paper itself.

  14. I intend to become a better writer by using several different strategies. First I will begin by reading my paper paragraph by paragraph correcting any grammar problems that I find along the way. After I have read over my work and I can no longer find flaws I will ask a friend to read over the paper in order to find mistakes that I was been unable to spot. Now if I am unable to get to the point where I can begin correcting my work, because I am struck by a sudden case of writers block then I will use two different strategies first I will attempt to free write not worrying about grammar I will write simply just to get something on the paper. If my previous attempt was not working I will get away from my work take a break and when I get back my mind should be ready to accomplish the task at hand.

  15. I will learn to be selective in a very important aspect of my life, I will learn to be selective in my schooling. I will do this in a couple ways first I will use selectiveness while taking notes in class I will make sure to only pick out important main topics, words, or phrases that the instructor has purposely made a note of, by doing this I will become a more efficient note taker. I will also be selective when I am reading, instead of trying to memorize a full chapter I will learn to pick out key topics that will aid me in my studies while ignoring the filler material that is not needed. By learning to be selective I will not only save time and energy but I will also most likely improve my grades and study habits.

I love to write essays for classes because I always get A's (rarely B's). However, their are times I get writers block. However, I overcome writers block by knowing what I am writing, what I want to discuss, and what my main points are. This can be done by making a rough rough draft or an outline. Furthermore, when writing, take breaks, and come back to the problem while you de-stress. Moreover, I find it helpful to look up other ideas from the internet, which sparks my own idea to continue writing.

    1. When dealing with a difficult class, I must learn how to prioritize my time and overcome all obstacles that are in my way. Sure the class may be boring however that doesnt justify and allow you to slack off and not succeed in class. Make a friend, have a group get together, study party, anything that will get your classmates active and closer to each other. Class may be boring but that doesn't mean studying can be boring as well. Have study parties and help each other out. While reviewing notes or learn new things, a new friend can be made as well; knock down two birds with one stone. For example: For my Band class last year, we were to memorize a song and be able to play it with no mistakes by the end of the week. I quickly formed a group because I knew I cannot do it on my own. After a couple of fun practices, not only did I master the song, I made new friends as well.

To over writers block, writers must be prepared before starting their essay. Freewrite whatever is in your thoughts, brainstorm your ideas, and draw out bullets of ideas. Instead of thinking as you write, think then write. Its easier when you have an outline out prepared and ready before actually writing the essay. Writer's block occurs when a writer is stuck and doesnt know what else to write. Draw out an outline and that problem would not be encountered

  19. I believe that I am a great note taker because over the years I have learned how to use all three methods to note taking. I include the Cornell format and the outline method in all of my notes and they have been very effective throughout all of my classes in both college and high school.

I intend to become a better writing by completing my thoughts through writer's block. I find myself going off into tangents and steering away from my main thesis. I tend to over think things and it makes it difficult for me to stay on topic and want to continue explaining more of what my main focus was meant to be. If I organize my topic and main points I believe that I can become a better writer overall.

I often get writers block. Good ways to get past writers block is to make sure your in calm environment with no distractions. Being prepared will always help. Brainstorm your ideas. Then put together all your highlights. Write down one paragraph at a time, don't move onto the next one until you are done with the first one. But if you get too stressed, take a break and then come back to it. Make a rough draft, & then go back and revise it.

Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

What I will do to become a better note taker is to not write down everything I see on the board, but write down what the main points are, use abbreviations. I will edit my paper more than once, and then have a family member to look over it. I will not procrastinate. I will start my paper ahead of time, so I can spread it out instead doing it all on the last weekend. To make sure I eat before I go to class.

I plan to become a better writer by using the Project Plan Outline which is Brainstorm ideas, Choose a topic, Gather information, Write a thesis statement, Write an outline, Write the introduction, Write the first draft, Prepare the bibliography, Edit, Revise, and Print and assemble. I plan to be more organized when writing by keeping the area where I do my work clean. I plan to improve my note taking by using the entire note taking system like Cornell Format, Outline Method, and the Mind Map format. Those are a few different ways I would help myself to become a better writer and note taker.

  22. Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?

By understanding the important facts in your life it makes things easier and faster. We can take steps towards being a genius be realizing what is important and what facts are not as important. When you realize these facts you do not have to waste time on the unimportant facts which gives you more time. At work you should know what the most important tasks are so you can prioritize. This way the most important things get done first. When you prioritize life becomes a lot less stressful. There were a lot of things I learned from this chapter that I am going to apply to my everyday life.

Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writer’s block. Read the section on writer’s block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.

There are a lot of ways to deal with writers block. Some of the ways to deal with writers block is to brainstorm or free write these tactics help loosen up ideas and thoughts from your head, which allows them to flow more naturally onto your paper. Another tip is to be prepared for the paper if it’s an in-class essay. This means know the general topics and keep up to date with the class, reading assignment or any other form of information that the paper might be about. I am fortunate enough to not get writers block very often. I do procrastinate though which is bad because your anxiety can lead to writers block.

To become successful in any area of your life, wether it be work, school, or professional it is very important to be selective. In school it is defenetely very important to be selective with the information that is given to us. Sometimes we are given a lot of information during lectures and at times half of the information that is given to us, we don't even need and when it comes to studying for an exam we sometimes study information that we don't need and could possibly affect us.

I want to become a better note taker by expirementing with the different ways that there is in taking notes like, the Cornell format and the outline format. I've always just written everything I see on the board or everything that that the teacher says, but its never been in a certain format, so I'm going to start and expirement with my note taking.

Sometimes I feel like as humans we have the tendency to rush ourselves to a point where we make it alot tougher for us run at our own selective pace. We may just need someoone to show us that. In High school i went way to fast and sometimes did not really care or not put much effort into the things I did. Understanding the little things I feel will make us Into a all around smarter person.

I have found succes in college by really mapping out my study and note taking habits. I have become a note taker that is really beneificial to me. The most important thing for me is to be selective in what I do with my time. It is important that I avoid procrastination and use my time wisely. I need to remember to do the things I need to do first and reward myself for doing those things with activities that I really enjoy. However, it is also important that I do things that I enjoy as part of my life. I was once given an assignment on how to succefully balance my day to day life and I could not believe how fantastic I felt just living one day to those standards. While doing work is important, it is also important to remember things like relaxation also.

I intend to continue to take classes that writing and note taking are essential to success within the classes so that I can avoid getting rusty. This will also help me to improve my skills to. I will also actually go back to my notes and study them. By efficiently taking notes, I will be more succesful in college
