  1. What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?

I would advise her to get a resume together, compose a cover letter, prepare for the interview, and do the best to can to make her best first impression. You only get one chance and she needs to make herself stand out. For example, by calling after turning in an application, and sending a thank you note after the interview. First off, I would tell her that when it comes to her resume it should include the following: contact information, a brief statement of your career objective, summary of your education, a summary of your work and/or volunteer experience, special skills, honors, awards, or achievements, and lastly, don’t forget to include references. The cover letter should include a statement of the job you are interested in and how you heard about it, how your education and experience would be assets to the company, and a request for an interview and how the employer can contact you. To be successful at the interview, it would help to learn about the job, knowing someone who works for the company could be a good thing. Understanding the interview criteria will also help a lot. Then finally make a good impression and don’t forget the thank you note.

  2. This semester is going fairly smoothly for me. School has always been a top priority for me so I don't have a big problem with procrastinating, but I am a mother of four with my older 3 being school-aged and my youngest being a 5 month old, so time is definitely of the essence. Thankfully, I have the privilege of currently being a stay at home mom, so I do not have the added pressure of an outside job. However, because of my many responsibilities, I have to very purposefully plan out when to do my schoolwork, as I have 2 other online classes besides this one. It definitely does not just happen that I get good study time in...it has to happen on purpose! I often say that I work ahead just so I can keep up! Sometimes I'll be ahead, but then my children will need some extra attention, or there will be an extra appointment to go to, or something like that, so it helps me to try to keep a step ahead!

If I had a friend who was getting ready for an important job interview, I would tell her that she should first and foremost prepare for her interview by doing some research about the position for which she is interviewing. It would be very good and show initiative for her to have a true understanding of what a person with the desired position does and what the responsibilities are. It would also be a good idea for her to have knowledge about the company and its history. I would tell her to be herself. I would tell her to try her best to relax, be confident, make good eye contact, be friendly, and dress appropriately for the interview. I would recommend that she arrive to the interview early, and I would recommend that she write a thank-you note after the interview.

  3. I was born in 1993 I am almost at the cut off for generation y or the millennial generation. There are a couple ways in which my generation will affect my future career choices, first of it will affect the amount of time I go to collage which in turn will affect my career with a higher degree come higher pay higher rank and more benefits. The new fear of terrorism in my generation will likely effect my career choice because I am strongly considering joining the military and then after a few years of military service trying to transfer to a government agency such as the CIA, FBI, or DOD whose jobs are in high demand because of the new threat of terrorism.

  4. This semester is going quite well for me in regards to my education. I have been able to keep up in all of my classes I have done well on the exams that I have taken, and I seem to be adjusting well to collage life, despite the fact that it is quite different than what I am used to. On a personal level this semester has been extremely difficult I have a very demanding job, two of my immediate family members were recently diagnosed with cancer, and on top of that I just started my first year of collage. Due to my families health problems I have had to take on extra responsibilities that make my life a little more complicated and I also have to cope with the emotional stress of the whole situation, despite all this I plan on continuing along as I have been going, taking it step by step and hope fully every thing will turn out all right. That is how my semester has been thus far.

  5. Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges? How can you deal with them ?

This semester has been going well so far. This is the first time I am taking 13 units so it is a new experience for me. At times it can get hectic but i find ways to deal with it. So far my grades are good and i am learning more about myself in this class. Ive learned about my millennial generation and how it is changing. One challenge i have is my math class. I'am not very good in math, so it can be a struggle. I don't want to give up and settle so i know i have to study more. I learn to deal with my roadblocks instead of ignorig them. Whenever i have a math test coming up I make sure to do a practice test online. Doing the practice test helps me on my error and how to fix them.

  6. This semester is going very well for me. I am taking 4 classes but two of them are have a minimal workload so it hasnt been overwhelming. This is the first time i have taken a class in about 10 years because i just got of the navy, so i thought it was going to be a little harder to transition from the professional world to the academic world. To counteract this, i made sure to take a couple classes that wouldnt require my full attention and would still count towards my major. So far so good. I havent gotten below a 96 on any test i have taken and all the papers i have turned have gotten full credit. My english 120 class is going especially well. It requires a ton of writing, but luckily i have been able to carve out the time necessary to accomplish these tasks. I am definitely looking forward to challenging myself with more difficult classes in the future. Sometimes i feel like i am wasting my time because i am not challenging myself to the level i expect, but at the same time i realize that i needed to ease in to college and not just jump in head first. Easing in has also allowed me to balance the time i have between my school work and family. i think this is invaluable because when i do take on a larger workload i will be able to look back on this semester and figure out how to use my time efficiently so that i am able to meet all my requirements.

  7. I am taking 5 classes which is equivalent to 15 units. At first this semester started off easier than I expected. I had A's in all of my classes, but as it continued, I started having less time to finish my assignments on time. I have been sleeping at 3am every night for the past 3 weeks and it has become harder and harder everyday. These last few weeks have showed me the commitment that school truly takes. In this last chapter, it mentions that one should take all of your required English and Math classes in the beginning of your college career. I decided to take those classes during this last semester. If I would've taken math during my first semester, I wouldn't be sleeping at 3am every night. That class alone takes at least 9 hours of my time each day because of all the assignments that are given. This includes quizzes, tests, labs, homework, and lectures. At the moment, I am trying to balance out my time and figure out which classes I am able to finish in the beginning of the week, so that I can spend more of my time studying and learning math. This semester is hard for me, but it demands my commitment; therefore, I know that it will be worth it for me in the end.

  8. This semester is going quite smoothly for me. I was extremely dissapointed when i didnt get my english class which i was waitlisted on for it wouldve been the last english class i'd have to take. I guess that kind of worked out because i dont know how i wouldve managed taking 18 units with the amount of work im doing in my classes right now. At first it felt like it was possible in the beginning but that would've added many more hours of work that im already doing for the four classes i am currently taking. Procastination is still one of the main issues i am dealing with which caused myself to feel dissapointed with with one of my classes outcomes from my first exam. It's taking those baby steps from overcoming this roadblock, and i am trying each day in improving my study skills for each course. One step i have taken is not studying in my home, because there are way too many distractions. I now study at local coffee shops and book stores; i saw a dramatic change with how much more i get done there than in my home. I'm hoping by the end of the semester, i will be satisfied with the outcome of all of my courses.

  9. i am part of the new millinials and i will have a big impact in this world one way or other, but before that the decisions that i make need to be good ones in order for me to help out others.becoming a veterinarian is my goal and i will accomplish this goal. what i found interesting was that i could have been anything in the science field but i chose the veterinary field,i could have been working towards making a lot more money as in engineer, but i don't know why i chose this path instead.

  10. What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?
I would advice my friend with some available tips, one of them is to prepare a good resume and be ready for the interview. A good example of resume must have all the education history. Also, include all the experiences that she/he has. In addition, an applicant has to mention the skills and qualifications. Of course, he will need to put the name, address, and phone number, so they can call him back. The resume has to be very clear and neat. References are important too because those could help an applicant by recommending him/her. A good first impression is also important and significantly valuable for people in charge; therefore, the application should wear formal clothes and show respect. Beside, being a good listener and listen carefully for the interviewer questions, in order to understand the question very well so he/she can answer clearly. Honesty is the main point in this case I believe an honest person can achieve his/her aims easily and gains others confidence. Finally, my friend has to compose a thank you letter and show appreciation to the interviewer.

  11. What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?

I will advice my friend to arrive a few minutes early. Give to yourself time to use the restroom if he need and to review his notes…..Wear good clothes and clean. Prepare your resume and a pad you can use to take notes during the interview. Turn off your cell phone before you arrive at the interview site because you will not make a good impression on your potential employer if your cell phone rings during the interview. Make eye contact with your interviewer. He should use polite language and proper terms rather than slang throughout your interview. Breathe deeply.
Taking deep breaths during the interview will not only help him to relax, but it'll also ensure that your blood is getting enough oxygen and make you feel a little bit more fresh and alert. Sit up straight, and avoid sighing when you exhale. As you leave, give each interviewer a firm handshake and thank them for meeting with you. He can also ask for their business cards if you do not yet have them. Having your interviewers' business cards is important for following-up purposes. You want to spell their name correctly and you want to send to each interviewer separate e-mails.

  12. What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?

I would advice my friend: Never arrive late to an interview you should enter the building 10 to 15 minutes before the interview. Wear well clothes. Make sure you are not only listening, but also reading between the lines. Answer the Question asked make sure you understand what is being asked, and get further clarification if you are unsure. Most interviewers will give you a chance to ask questions, so use this opportunity to show your interest in the position and find out key details about the work flow.
It is important to appear confident and cool for the interview. One way to do that is to be prepared to the best of your ability. There is no way to predict what an interview holds, but by following these important rules you will feel less anxious and will be ready to positively present yourself. You should thank employer, shook his hands, and if he has business card asking him to take one.

  13. Nice and simple this week: How is my semester going.

Well thanks for asking, it's going almost as well as I'd hoped. At the start of the semester, my father told me "Straight A's or you lose your car, this is it." I was already planning to do my best but I suppose that helped with a little extra push. Getting back into the swing of things was hard at first. I'm taking Calculus this year and haven't had a Precalculus class for over a year. Chemistry is coming back to me too after having it 6 years ago. I'm always worried about Calculus but I have a B+, and every single quiz or test, my grade gets a little higher. In fact, my biggest stress this semester is my dancing. I have to juggle two different companies, each doing a separate show, and both of them expect me to be at theirs all the time. On saturdays, since they rehearse at the same time, my friend Vincent (has the same deal as me) and I can just deny responsibility for being late. They really can't argue with us most the time. Overall I would say this semester is going well. I worry about my grades though.

  14. This semester seems to be going fairly well for me. I decided to only take online classes this semester to try to get back in the groove of schooling. This has been a very good decision for me since I work often. I am taking interesting classes which also makes this semester all the better! I have already had a few challenges in this semester though. Right now, I am even in a situation that is making it a bit of a challenge to get my work done for classes. Still, I am trying to keep up with schooling. My boyfriend and I just drove up to North Dakota because he is going to be working here. I have had to be out of town for quite some time. Thank goodness for the internet!

    1. I totally agree with you. Internet has been a savior for me this semester. I absolutely have no time in my schedule to fit in a class while working full time and trying to keep food on the table for my family. I'm able to stay up at night and cut a few hours out of my sleep in order to complete the online assisngments. One of the best perks of obtain an online class is the schedule is as flexible as you want it. The test and quizzes are up online and we could use open book if we would like. This allows us student to choose to work in an environment we wish to work in rather than be trapped in a classroom. i work every week Monday through friday from 6 am to 12pm and then my second job starts at 2 and ends at 10pm. there is absolutely no time for me to waste. because of my schedule, i would have to rearrange and reconsider my breakfast, lunch, and dinner time. so convieniece is the reason why the online courses are so beneficial to student like me. although it is very convenient to have a class online, there certainly are downfalls such as the importunity of gaining the 'in class' experience, teacher's aid, and the social bond among classmates. but overall, i totally agree with you. thank god we have online classes offered.

  15. A few tips I would give a friend of mine that was looking for a job would have to be to tell them to relax and to ease up on the nerves. Also take a resume. Make sure to keep their resume no longer then a page. I would tell them to be sure to have letters of references or recommendation. Make sure your resume is easy to read. I also would tell them that during an interview do not chew gum, play with your hands, move too much, never talk bad of previous employer, and turn off your cell phone or electronics. I would tell them to always make eye contact, always ask questions, sit up straight, do research on the company before going to the interview, be there 10 minutes early, offer a handshake, and take the interview very seriously. Also dress appropriate for the job interview, grooming and cleanliness are always looked for in an interview, never wear a revealing top. I would tell him or her to be very honest when the person who is interviewing them is asking questions. Those are just a few things I would tell a friend before he or she were to go to an important job interview.

  16. Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges or roadblocks? How can you deal with them?

This semester is going ok for me the classes I am taking are at a medium difficulty but in the future they would get harder so I have to be ready. The homework is not the problem most students face it is maintaining time to study and time to work while going to college and this is the type of challenge I am facing, because every week I have to make time to do my homework and turn it in on time I have to be on schedule to do my homework and turn it in before the due date so I could at least start on the next, because if I fall behind on one homework I will fall behind on the other classes as well so time for me is important. This challenge will stay and I have deal with it in tell I finished college. And also it is difficult for me to take enough units so I could transfer to SDSU on the time I wanted.

  17. What is your generation? Baby Boomer? Generation X? New Millennial? How will your generation affect your future career choices?

I am of the New Millennial generation (aka Generation Y). There are not precise dates of when the generation started and ends; however, analysts range it to be from 1970’s-2000. Members of this generation (such as myself) are also called “Echo Boomer,” due to the substantial increase in birth rates in the 80’-90’s. Furthermore, my generation has an increased familiarity with technology. We know all the bells and whistles to computers, cell phones, etc. However, my generation will be stuck with the debt from the previous generations trying to pay it off. Although, there will be an increase of many job opportunities, such as health care around the year 2020. My future career choice is becoming an RN (registered nurse). The job outlook for RN’s, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is a 26% increase of job openings from 2010-2020. Another 800 thousand people will be hired between these 10 years. Our average salary is approximately thirty-one dollars an hour, earning 65 thousand a year. My generation will affect my future career choice by possibly making it harder to become an RN since healthcare is always a competitive field to get into.

This semester is going good so far. I'm enjoying most of my classes and I am keeping track of the work that needs to be done for them. I think that the only challenge for me this semester is trying to figure out my requirements for what I want to major in. I recently changed my major from Communications to Nursing and I've been having trouble to figure out not only the requirements for it but I've been considering to join the military with a nursing program and I've been having a hard time trying to figure out wether or not I should go down that path. I've heard that they have a good program for nursing but it has become a very difficult decision to make for myself since it would be a decision that my parents wouldn't agree with me on. I think that before I make any decisions I'm going to visit a councilor and see the nursing programs that are available for me. Then visit a recruiter and inform myself more about their nursing program that they have. I think that once I have gathered information from both places it will be much easier for me to make a decision on which path to take. For now until I go and visit a councilor and recruiter I'm just going to concentrate on my school work and once I have both side I will make that decision.

  19. Semester So Far:

So far I would say the semester is going really well. I’m back to being a good student (all A’s), and have my family issues under control (ill grandmother). With that being said, I can’t really complain. I have yet to face another “roadblock”, as the previous ones I had to deal with were acknowledged and taken care of. I honestly though it would be difficult getting back in the routine of taking care of my family’s needs while maintaining a strong academic standing in college, but thus far it’s been pretty sweet. However, I have started a new job to get some extra spending money and it’s a tad time consuming. So far it hasn’t really identified itself as a future roadblock considering I’ve been able to balance work/school/family pretty well, but there is always the possibility of one occurring. With that being said, if work does tend to become a challenge, I may have to cut down on hours so that I don’t break the fine balance I currently have. I think it’s important to plan ahead for any future problems since I can’t really afford to relinquish anymore of my time where it is not needed. Furthermore, the semester has been good, my stress level is under control, and I’m enjoying life.

  20. This semester seems to be going pretty well except for the fact that I keep procrastinating in all my classes. Now, I know that this is a really bad trait and hopefully next week’s assignments will help with this. I also really don't care for two of my classes which are economics and financial accounting. The financial accounting is super boring and all it seems like is busy work. The good part about the accounting class is I really like the teacher. As far as economics go this class isn't that bad just kind of boring, but I have to take it. There are interesting things about the economics class to though like the whole secret society concept and I like the teacher in that class too. But overall this is my favorite class, and I’m not trying to be a suck up, it’s just I really didn’t have a direction before this class and I was lost but so far I’m very interested in maybe becoming and engineer of some sort or maybe a job that requires designing things or possibly even an entrepreneur. I’m still not sure but at least I have a lead and I feel like my organizing skills have improved too.

  21. Hi Austin,
The economics and financial accounting courses are for business majors. Since you are interested in engineering, focus on math through calculus. See a counselor or visit www.assist.org for a list of courses to prepare for a major in engineering. Wishing you the best! Marsha Fralick

  22. Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges or roadblocks? How can you deal with them?

This semester is so far going pretty good for myself. But some road blocks that I have been facing is the same one that I have been facing sense before I started this class. The thing that i'm struggling with most are not fully deciding whether or not I want to stick with the career that I have been sticking with for 5 years now. But what I can do to deal with that are maybe start volunteering, getting a job that has to do with counseling to see if that's what I want to get into. Maybe if I see someone doing what I want to do behind closed doors, it will make me decide if I want to stick with it or not.

What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?
The tips I would give my friend is to wear very p resentful clothes, speak with proper vocabulary, ask questions when you need to, that shows you are interested, having a positive and good attitude, never show up late, always smile, don't act too nervous, and just be positive.

I went on the assist.org site and I have been on this site several times in the past. This site has been the main reason why I was able to find the major I want to major in. While I was on this site I looked up many of the majors that would be best for me after I did a personality quiz back when I was a freshman and a university. It told me the best majors for me but I decided to go against what it said would be best. Now, still in college and still trying to pursue a degree, I have found it to be the best foundation on knowing what I need to finish college by starting my career as becoming a journalist/ creative writer. I love how it pin points every class you need for your major as well as tell you how to transfer and what you’ll need to transfer.

Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges or roadblocks? How can you deal with them?
This semester I am having some financial roadblocks since I have changed jobs so that I can start a career for the major that I am trying to pursue. I have cut back on a lot of things as well as sold something’s that I no longer use. My parents have also been very helpful for me as well to help me financially in some instances, but I hope I do not become a hindrance on them. I have challenges on when to finish some of my work for this class since I have to work full time and be a mother full time, but I’m am learning that if I can get ahead, it better than being behind. My goal is to finish this course rather than fail it for not completing such tasks that will only help my future as an adult.

  24. What tips would you give to a friend who is going to an important interview?
I would help my friend prepare for an interview by going through practice interviews together and asking questions that might come up. Some of these questions are "tell me a little bit about yourself", "why do you want to work here/ for us?", and "give me some of your strengths and some of your weaknesses". Other questions to go over would be about previous employment and the reasons for leaving, how to handle a difficult situation (depending on type of job, for example, how to handle a dissatisfied customer in a retail job). Other important points to discuss for the interview are mannerisms and appearance. I believe how a person appears for an interview gives a good idea of what to expect from that individual. Becuase I believe appearances are important for success, I would want to help my friend get an idea of what to wear. If they were applying for a customer service job, I would reccommend business casual attire, like dark slacks and a button up collared shirt with low to no heel. If they were applying for a manager's position, I would favor professional clothes, like something closer to a suit with structure. Also, I would want to help my friend appear confident and well prepared; we might discuss the importance of eye contact and clear speaking (avoiding "uuhhs" and long pauses), open body language that is comfortable and casual but not relaxed or fidgety (sitting with their back straight, arms not crossed, no thumb twiddling or foot tapping), and we could even practice handshakes because they do give a first impression. I would also want to review the job application and resume and personal/business contacts to ensure everything is fresh in their memory and ready for a successful interview. Finally, we would review a time schedule and driving directions to ensure they have enough time to get to the interview and they know where they are going, because showing up late is unexcusable and would probably lead to not recieving the position.

  25. Make a comment about how this semester is going for you. Are you facing any challenges or roadblocks? How can you deal with them?
    - I think the semester is going okay. I am doing good in this class and I understand my other class, but I am having trouble in a World Religion class. The teacher's personality and mine don't click so I have a hard time understanding him. He seems to drift off into stories, and it confuses me when I am trying to learn the material. I am also not understanding what I am learning. I am not interested in the class, so I have a hard time focusing on what the teacher is saying and I find myself spending more time drifting off and day dreaming more than paying attention. To deal with these problems, I have talked to the teacher. I also tried to find something that interests me in the class each day.

What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?
    - If my friend was going to a very important job interview, I would tell them to act professional and confident. I would tell them that for the resume they should write clearly, be brief, be neat, be honest, have letters of reference, use good-quality paper, and post resume online. I would tell them to be relaxed and think positively.
