Chapter 11, Thinking Critically and Creatively, Nov 5-11

For this week, make two comments. For the first comment, give an example of a fallacy in reasoning. See my examples below. For the second comment, give your answers to the creative thinking questions below. Have fun with the creative thinking.

Critical Thinking:

Give an example of a fallacy in reasoning. Here are some examples: 1. When my children were very young, I would tell them to brush their teeth in the evening. I told them that if they did not brush their teeth, the sugar bugs would eat their teeth all night and eventually their teeth would turn green and fall out. By predicting dire consequences, we try to influence behavior. This is an example of using slippery slope. Maybe some of you child development majors would have a better way of getting children to brush their teeth, but this worked for me. 2. Here is another example: When my daughter was in middle school, she died her blond hair black. I asked her why she did it and she said that she was tired of blond jokes. She was the victim of the stereotype that all blondes are dumb. 3. You will also find many examples of fallacies in reasoning in commercials and political speeches. Can you provide other examples of fallacies in reasoning?

Creative Thinking:

For the creative thinking part, read about creativity and brainstorming and have a little fun with this exercise. Provide at least 3 answers to these questions: 1. How is a peanut like you? Here are my answers. 1. A peanut is wrinkled, like me. 2. A peanut is curvy like me. 2. I have a hard outer shell and a soft inner shell. How is a peanut like going to college? In every classroom there are at least 2 nuts, the instructor and at least one student. The squares on the peanut remind me of rows of chairs in the classroom. 3. There is usually something good on the inside.

  1. Critical Thinking:
Imagine a couple living together; the man’s clothes are all over the floor and the kitchens a mess. Instead of just asking the man to please pick up his things, the woman asks him why he has to be such a lazy slob all the time. This is one example of attacking the person rather than discussing the issues.

    Creative Thinking:

  2. Logical fallacies are very common in politics. Before i go in to this let me just i am independent and both sides use countless fallacies, this is just the first that came to mind. One recent example i can think of is how the republicans created the term "death panels" and attached it to Obamacare, which later was dubbed PolitiFacts Lie of the Year for 2009. This is an appeal to fear and it was also used as a straw man argument in many political speeches, commercials, and various forms of media.

When i was little my mom would use a strategy to get me to take a bath everyday before i went to bed. When there would be nights i would be to tired to take a bath, my mom told me if i didn't take a bath the bed bugs would comeand get me. This is an example of using slippery slope. My mom still uses this method with my little sister and it still works.

  4. Fallacies in reasoning:
A red herring argument is an irrelevant point which distracts us from the issue at hand. Political ads are FULL of these! For example, I personally didn't vote for Bob Filner, but I saw a commercial on TV several times that talked about how "scary" he was because at one time he was charged with assaulting a baggage handler. We do not know the whole story for sure, and what does that have to do with the job he will do as mayor? Another red herring argument would be to say something like "How can President Obama run our country?! I mean, he smokes cigarettes!"

    Creative thinking:

Growing up, watching television was my favrite sport (if it is considered a sport). I would sit and stare at the tv all day if I could. I often skipped meals and missed out on sleep because of the non stop entertainment that is being displayed in front of my eyes. This however all changed when I hit the age of 10 years old. My mother told me that since I have hitten double digits in age, I am limited to a 2 hour tv limited a day or else I will become blind. This is an example of using slippery slope. Because of her authority I am condoned to agree with everything she says. By predicting dire consequences, we try to influence behavior. Growing up and averaging 30 minutes of televsion was rough growing up however I soon to adapt and dropped the bad habit.

Give an example of a fallacy in reasoning.
Before I finished my high school my dad told me “Bahnam you have a year in tell you finish high school your mother and I in our best interest that we want you to go to college and have any degree at your choice and if you decide not too you’ll have financial problems in the future and you won’t have the job you always look for to be satisfied if you go to college you will meet your goal with no problems and have a better future.” This was an example of slippery slope.

  11. Fallacies in reasoning come in many different shapes and sizes some are worse than others. But during this time of the every four years fallacies are appearing in great number with not much truth behind them all over the television. During election season this always occur the democrats blame the republicans for being greedy money grubbers whose only goal is to destroy the middle class. On the other hand the republicans are blaming the democrats for destroying the country increasing our already crazy amount of debt and wanting to destroy big business. In both cases the other side is falsely accusing their opponent of things that have not happened and may never happen no matter who is in power, and in the long run both sides look bad.

A sophomore in high schools finally gets the chance to hang out with a group of seniors that she has been wanting to hang out with since she was a freshman. They all invite her to a party. They gather into a garage full of strobe lights and fog smoke. In the corner she sees a group of people hovering over a table. Her new group of senior "friends" convince her to come near the table. She apprehensively walks closer to the table and sees them doing a lines of coke. Fear creeps over her skin while a senior in her left ear whispers, "C'mon do it! Everyone else is doing it."

I remember that in middle school I had a friend that believed that everything he read on the internet was true. He believed that nobody could put anything on the internet unless it was factual. He came to school telling people outrageous facts that were often hilarious because they were so inaccurate. Some other kid told him that the internet could not have false information on it because it was illegal, and he believed it for a very long time. I tried explaining him that much of what was on the internet was true, but that anybody could post information on it.

When I was in middle school I really wanted a cell phone so I went to my mom and asked for one. My mom said, "No, there is no reason for you to have a cell phone at your age." I argued, "All of my friends have one." This of course wasn’t true but it was a generalization but she knew it was that and didn’t get me one. Every time we would argue about it I would always say that. Know I realize that wasn’t the best way to go about it. I later got a cell phone because I would always go out and skateboard with friends and she wanted to know I was safe.

  19. When I was young of about the age of 5 or 6 years old, I would make funny faces at people (crossing my eyes and such); which I found amusing. However, my mother thought it was rude. So, she told me my face would stay like that if I continued to do that. This is an example of slippery slope because of her authority and me agreeing to everything she says.
