Hello students and welcome to Counseling 120, College and Career Success!  Take a look at my video introduction above. Please introduce yourself by telling us about your interests, hobbies and what is important in your life and maybe share a photo or video of yourself as one of your postings this week. As your second posting, tell us about your educational journey, why you are taking this class and your goals and dreams for the future and include comments about other students' postings.

This class is especially useful for those of you who want to understand yourself better and choose a major and career that matches your gifts and talents. The class also meets a general education requirement for transfer to state universities. If this is your first class in college, you are off to a good start. If you are a continuing student, there are some great benefits. You will become familiar with some new learning tools that will make your future education easier.

Since the course is online, you can do the work anytime or any place during the week. For best results, be sure to set aside time for working on this class each week and not wait unitl the last minute to do the work. I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Marsha Fralick’s Introduction

Here is an example of a 100 word introduction:

I am your professor for Counseling 120. I retired from Cuyamaca College where I worked from 1978-2007 as a counselor and instructor for this course. I play many roles in life. I am a Grandmother with 2 young granddaughters. I enjoy taking care of them frequently and watching them grow. My own children are grown up and have their own careers and homes. I have my own business and work with colleges across the country in training faculty to teach college success courses. In my leisure time I enjoy traveling and being active. I just got back from a trip to Hawaii and Alaska. It was great!

Marsha Fralick’s Educational Journey

Here is an example of a 100 word posting.

I attended a small country high school in New Mexico and was a good student. When I went to the University of New Mexico, I found that it was a whole new world and I was not prepared for it. I struggled to be successful in college and had to learn how to listen to lectures, take notes and prepare for exams. I also had uncertain career goals. When I started working at a college, I remembered those years that I struggled and decided to invent a course that would help students to be successful. It has been a fun and rewarding adventure for the last 33 years.

  1. Hello,
My name is Cedrice Webber, I am 21 years old and I was born and raised in San Diego. I have interests in singing, attending spoken word open mics, and volunteering for an organization called ARWOB which is an adoption agency for cats and dogs. I also do volunteer work for an organization called "I love a clean San Diego." This organization has different events that gather many people together to help clean up beaches and help teach kids the importance of a healthy environment for themselves and for the animals. I spend most of my time with my family, my boyfriend, along with my musician friends that like to play guitars and keyboards. Writing lyrics to poetry and music are very much important to me because I use those two ways as a source of expression for myself. Aside from my hobbies, I have been attending Grossmont for three years and this is my last semester here before I transfer to SDSU. I am pursuing my communication major with the emphasis of media and broadcasting in the desire of becoming a media producer. I am looking forward to this class because I have felt a decadence in my motivation. From reading the pre-test and chapter 1 of the e-text, fortunately I can already tell that I will be motivated to keep striving with college to do well, push through and succeed.

  2. Introduction
Hi my name is Paul Lingren. I've lived in San Diego all my life (23 years). I love to snowboard, draw, party, eat, and spend leisure time with friends but above all else, I am a dancer. I always try to be a pleasant person, but can't stand when other people aren't. Other than that I live near grossmont in a house full of animals and I am just truckin along. I don't actually own a truck though.

    My Journey
I went to a super sheltered private school til 8th grade. It didn't really prepare me for public high school but I made some irreplaceable lifelong friends. During High School I got mediocre grades and I wish I had cared more. My first few years of college weren't so great either. I changed majors every semester thinking to myself "This is the one" only to realize otherwise. Then I took a year off to dance hard and collect my thoughts. In my absence from school I got a job in the California Ballet Company, and became a Principal Dancer at San Diego Academy of Ballet. I realized what I can be capable of and now I'm back to school ready to take the challenge.

    Amy Allen's Introduction

My name is Amy Allen. I am 28 years old, am married, and have four great children aged 9, 7, 5, and almost 4 months old. I am originally from northwest Indiana, and came to San Diego through the navy, which is also how I met my husband. We are both civilians now and have decided to remain here in San Diego. My family and I are very active in our wonderful church- Lighthouse Baptist Church of Lemon Grove. I also enjoy couponing! I am not one of those crazy people on Extreme Couponing, but I do love saving money, and couponing is very rewarding to me. Of course, spending time with my family and enjoying my new baby is also something I absolutely love. I look forward getting to know all of you!

    Amy Allen's Educational Journey

Like Paul, I also went to a Christian school coming up. I really loved it though, and was always a good student that made good grades. After graduating high school, I joined the military, then later became a stay at home mom, and am more recently a student again. Since I am taking time from my family to go to school, I am very dedicated to doing my very best so that it is not a waste of my time. I have been able to maintain a very good GPA. I study hard and do not procrastinate. I am very motivated to do well by the fact that the program I want to get into is very competitive.

  8. Introduction:
I’m Kristen Hooke and this is my second year at Cuyamaca. My birthday’s coming up but for now I’m still 18. I’m a single child and I live with my two moms. I have two golden retrievers, they’re brothers and always getting into things. I was born and raised in San Diego, CA and currently live all the way in Alpine. I recently got a new job at an AT&T kiosk and I’m looking forward to getting more job experience and making more money. When I’m not working or doing schoolwork I enjoy trying new/unusual foods, meeting new people, and doing new things. I also love to travel.

    My Journey:
The academic side of school has always come fairly easy to me, I’ve always been a hard-worker and took a lot of AP classes in high school but unfortunately I had kind of a hard time making friends. Living so far away from the school (about 30 mins.) made it hard to get involved and I kind of just went through the motions. Although this disappoints me I hope college can be different and that I’m able to make more of the social aspect. I’ve always planned on doing something in the medical field. I hope to be a physician’s assistant one day and I’m doing what I can to be prepared for that. I’m taking this class in hopes that it will help me look at the big picture and be better prepared for my future in school and in the working world.

  9. Introduction:
My name is Ray Johnson. I am 28 years old and this is my first year of college. I was an Electronics Technician, meaning i repaired radars and satellite communications equipment, in the Navy for the past 8 years. I have been married for 7 years to a crazy puerto rican woman and we have a 2 year old son named Maddux. I have a golden retriever named Marley and a siberian husky named Adrian.

    Educational Journey:
I lived in Texas for the first 18 years of my life and attended public school throughout my formative years. I went through various schools while in the navy but have not taken an actual course in quite some time so needless to say i am a little rusty. My plan is to knock out some classes at Cuyamaca and Grossmont and then transfer to SDSU to finish my degree in electrical engineering. But that could always change.

  10. Introduction;
Hi, my name is Kourtney Ball and I am 19 years old. I was born and raised in Santee, California. This is my second year of college. I live with my parents, sister, two cats, dog, and my two month old child, Brody. Having a child changes my hobbies, and interests, everything I do now is for Brody. But we do like to be outdoors and I love being productive.

    My Journey;
I had a rough time throughout highschool with my grades. Test are something I struggle in, and want to learn ways to help me study. I am now more determined than ever to push through it and get done what I need to get done for my son. I am currently struggling in what I want to be in life, i'm not sure if I want to continue to be a counselor even though that's what I had planned for the last five years. That's a big reason why i'm taking this class. I do hope to move out of California one day, either to Colorado or Wyoming.

It has just been my mother and I together for the past 18 years because my father passed away when I was two years old. I love her and she is the world to me.#mommysboyforlife.This is my second year at Grossmont College and plan to transfer to sdsu next year. 12. Greetings everyone!
My birth name is Dorian Cao however my friends call me Doug. I'm 19 years old, spent my whole life in San Diego, going to be a sophomore at Cuyamaca College, and I have a profound interest and passion for painting. I currently live with my mom and own two lovely dogs, Tiki and Bun-Bun. Although I'm not a fan of spending my leisure time out with friends because often times I would feel ostracized and left out, my best friend Sara is an exception. She has been there through thick and thin with me. My goal in life is to create a very lucrative business with her in the near future. And with that imaginary income flowing and proliferating simultaneously, I would like to retire my mother. She has sacrificed so much for me and this would be the first step of paying back something I could never pay back. I love my mom, Sara, Tiki, and Bun-Bun. My life long goal is to be able to paint the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

    My Journey,
School has been a bumpy ride for me; it has its ups and downs. I have been growing up being teased because of my sexual orientation and taught that school should be put before painting however painting is my dream. But because of the competition in the job market, education is a necessity. I am unsure of what I want to do in the future and hopefully I will take out a lot of things by taking this class. I need to find my future path soon because I've been living in vain with struggle and stress. Seeking for success is tough for me however I will not give up. I'm ready to continue my journey.

Hello Everyone! I am Vanessa Bobo, 25 years old and I have been living in San Diego for the past three years. I have been in and out of San Diego all of my life. My Father was in the Air Force and I have moved to many different areas, but my Father chose to settle down in San Diego since this is his native city. I have been in college for a while now, there have been many struggles preventing me from completing my Bachelors Degree, but I am still determined to accomplish this goal. I live on my own with my boyfriend, I work full time, and I have an 18 month old son as well, named Bruce. I love being creative and doing a lot of Art. But I am still very lost in what to major in. Hopefully this course will give me some insight.

    My Journey
I was a great student in High School. I was a B+ Student. College has been the struggle for me. I am constantly finding myself not being able to finish courses due to family emergencies during past semesters but now my family is okay and doing well. My mother is a breast cancer survivor, and was one of the main reasons in the past I wasn’t able to attend school like I wanted. I wanted to make sure I was by her side the whole time she was having her chemo and etc. Now that she is well; I have no worries and am focused more now than ever. I have the motivation and determination to go full speed ahead in life and fulfill this goal that I’ve been waiting to accomplish for so long now.

Hi, my name is Alex Arroyo. I was born on June 17, 1994. This is my first year in college and I am very excited for it. I want to get my major in Criminal Justice but I am still not 100 percent set on anything which worries me. I currently am working full time and going to school which I am expecting will stress me out at times. I am very close to my Family and Friends that I am very grateful for having in my life. I enjoy watching and playing football as well as working out on my own time to help release some of the stress.I think this class will help me out and I am very excited to get started!

    My Journey

I started High School at Steele Canyon but switched over my Jr year to Valhalla High School where i graduated. My grades struggled a little but i soon picked up the speed. Right after graduation I got a job with Farmers Insurance where I am still currently working. I am just a little worried of juggling a job and school at the same time but I'm sure i'll be able to do it! This course should help me very much on my upcoming journey.

  15. Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Alex Arkin. I am twenty years old. I was born and raised in San Diego and I feel truly blessed. As wonderful as it has been here, I am looking to transfer to somewhere in Northern California. I need a change of pace and scenery. Ever since I can remember I was raised in two separate homes. If anything, I think the circumstance brought me even closer to each of my parents and helped me form strong bonds with them individually. Like Cedrice Webber, I frequently explore my deepest thoughts through writing. It could take the form of writing fictional and non-fictional stories, poetry, and songs. I am currently writing a sort of self help book right now which outlines my approach to life and my perspective on the many aspects of it. Music is my love. It always keeps me dancing through whatever life throws at me. Other than my family, friends, and my dog Casey, what's really important to me is making a difference in the lives of others. I prefer a direct approach in accomplishing this, which is why I think I am going to be a Psychiatrist. I love to be outdoors, whether I am hiking, playing basketball, simply walking around enjoying the sights, or rock climbing. This is also my first online class and I am really looking forward to it.

    Educational Journey

I was always an exceptional student but by my Junior year in High School I started to lack motivation. I still completed most of my work but like Alex Vela, I too could not find a healthy balance between my spontaneous lifestyle and my schoolwork. I do wish I had taken school more seriously those last years in high school. I chose this class because I have struggled to figure out what I really want to do for a living. I was so happy to find this class. When I look to the future, I can't necessarily imagine myself in a specific field yet. I am very interested in business management and running my own business but on the other hand I have a passion for talking to and helping others with their problems. I hope I can progress in my decision through the things I will learn about myself in this course. Either way when I think about my goals and dreams, I only wish for happiness, true love and eventually a beautiful family of my own, knowledge, success, and a real purpose in life.

I am doing general education courses during my time here, and hope to transfer to Cal State University San Marcos to pursue becoming a history major and eventually getting teaching credentials and becoming a teacher. I hope to learn some new skills from this course and I hope everyone else is able to take away something from it rather than just seeing it as general education requirements.

Hello, my name is Alena Tsal and I am 26 years-old. I am originally from Ukraine. I moved to the United States in 1999, so 12 years ago. I moved here with my mom, dad and my younger brother. I miss Ukraine so much, and wish I can visit more, since all my other relatives are back there. I've only been there twice since I moved here. On my leisure days I love to read, cook, spend as much time with my family and friends as I can, and clean. Yes, I love to clean, I can't stand being somewhere that is not clean. But, I'm definitely not OCD about it. :) Even though I love to cuddle with a good book, I'm defitely a very "outdoorsy" person. I love playing all kinds of sports, in high school I played soccer and tennis. I love hiking, going out and explore the world, kind of like my own little adventures :) Recently I've adopted a puppy, he's definitely the center of my world right now. He's four and a half months right now, and his name is Bullet. He's half chihuahua, half miniature pincher, he's the cutest thing in the whole wide world. :)

    Journey
My journey began in Ukraine, I was there up to 8th grade. I was a good student there. When I came to US, I went to Crawford High School, which I graduated in 2004. It was definitely a challenge for me because I did not speak one word of English. But, I pushed myself and I can now say that I had a pretty good time in high school. Then, I went to Grossmont College and Cuyamaca College, where I got my Associate's Degree in Business Admin. After, I got a job and took some time off from school. Currently I'm attending National University working on BA in Business Finance. I am taking this class to complete my general ed for transfering. It's way cheaper than taking ge at National University. I've taken many courses online, so I'm pretty good with managing my time, I had to learn that the hard way. I hope that this course will help me to find out if Finance is right for me. I'm pretty sure it is, but it will be fun to see where I will be at the end of this course. :)

I would like to continue my educational path, by learning more and more, and by making a proper plan in order to follow it correctly to accomplish my goals. When I came here from Iraq I wanted to be a social worker. A little by a little I am going through my path. These are one of the reasons that I took this class. I hope this class will help me to reach my goal especially when I gathered some information about this class from my friend. I see myself in this field (social work) because I am a social person, and I like teamwork.

  28. Hi my name is Tori Ward, I'm nineteen years old born and raised from San Diego. As lovely and amazing as San Diego is and I have been truly blessed to grow up here I'm looking to move more up north, possibly LA or San Fransisco. I played volleyball for seven years, to say I take it very seriously would be putting it lightly, unfortunately my volleyball career got cut short when I was diagnoses with very severe rheumatoid arthritis at a early age. I'm in the process of opening up my own online store with a couple of friends, fashion is what I do and to be able to do something that i love and get paid for it is my dream like anyone else.

    Education

Growing up I went to a lot of different schools but for most of my education I attended at Christian Jr/high school. Going to a private school all my classes we're very difficult and everyone was always trying their best to get good grades and keep up in their classes. My junior year I transferred to Granite Hills High School, what a huge change that was. Im so thankful to have gotten to experience both private and public school learning the great things of both. Having to make new friends and make something out of myself in a school with thousands of kids compared to the four hundred I was so comfortable with. For my Future right now I'm just taking some general ed classes and see if there's anything else out there I might enjoy doing before I decide to enroll into a Art or Fashion institute. Considering the prices of those schools I want to be sure that's what I want to do, but anyone who knows me knows I most likely will end up there.

  29. Hi my name is Angelica Baltazar but prefer to go by Angie Baltazar. I am 19 years old. I graduated from High Tech High. This is my second year of college, hopefully soon I'll be transferring to SDSU. I want to major in Communications. In my free time I like to hang out with friends. I like to travel, I've been to places such as Spain, Portugal, and Germany and hope to visit many other country's in my future. I like meeting new people although I am a very shy person initially. I hope to one day move to New York. I look forward to learning new things in counseling 120 that will help me in my education and career. I'm excited to get this class started and to see what I learn.

  31. Hi there! My name is Ana Pailles. Born in Mexico City, but have lived all my life in San Diego. I am currently taking this exact same course a second time because two semesters ago I took it and unfortunately, the assignments accumulated and became difficult for me to catch up on time. This time around is different. I am determined to succeed. I plan to transfer in two semesters to UCSD or UC Berekely, majoring in political science-public law. I have high hopes and know that I will make it!

  32. Introduction:
Hi I'm Tayler Shakowski and I was born and raised in San Diego. I am 18 years old. I'm on the Cuyamaca women's soccer team. I have been playing soccer since I was 4 years old. I was supposed to be attending Cal Poly Pomona in the fall, but I decided it just wasn't for me and I wanted to stay in San Diego. I want to be a paralegal and work for a big law firm. I love being outside, exercising, hanging out with my friends, and spending time with family.

    My Journey:
When I was in high school, I was a B-, C average student. I would also try really hard in the beginning of the class, and then I would stop trying when the class started getting more and more difficult. Sophomore year, I found out I had ADHD and ever since then, I have been getting help for it and doing much better in school. I found it hard to keep my grades up during the middle of the school year when I had soccer and other things to do. I always seemed to be more interested in the socializing aspect of class, rather than the learning. I am hoping college will be different and I will really buckle down and do my work.

  33. How do you motivate yourself to become successful?

Success is a broad term. I for one view success in many different ways, but when it comes to motivation the more obvious definitions become visible. For example, it is my dream to become the first person in my family to become a surgeon (not sure what exactly I want to specialize in yet). Not only do I desperately want to achieve this goal, I also want to excel at it. Motivation comes naturally when you want something so bad, and in order to obtain what you crave you must develop a game plan that unlocks the door to your aspirations. With that being said, in order to be sure that I reach my goal I identify my weaknesses and confront them head on. That way, I am assured that only future bumps along the road are minimal. This is where motivation comes in. In order to motivate myself to keep moving forward, and as cheesy as it sounds, I wake up each day and visualize what outcome may come about after all my hard work (schooling) is said and done. By using this method of foreshadowing, I become more aware of what I have to do in order to reach this rather large dream of mine, such as taking an extra hour out of my day to study. Furthermore, this is one of my many methods of motivation to become successful that I use, and to be honest, I would have too long of a post if I were to continue. So, let’s just end this first question here.

What are some roadblocks to your success and how can you overcome them?

This is an interesting question as I have had MANY roadblocks in my journey to success thus far. One of the more recent obstructions that I had to overcome was migrating back down to San Diego (I was previously at CSU Northridge) to be with my family. Don’t get me wrong; I didn’t leave the university because I was homesick but because two of my family members were falling gravely ill, and having to constantly travel back and forth to care for them was tremendously hurting my grades (and wallet). I suppose this example really doesn’t really stand as a “roadblock” to success, but it defiantly served as an issue. I knew that in order to remain in school I had to be closer to my family. As a way of overcoming this obstacle, I moved back down to San Diego and am now taking online classes at Cuyamaca until my G.E.’s are up and I transfer to UCSD.

  34. I felt like i would really be able to grasp the meaning of Motivation and the understanding of it very well. I learned about good and bad habits and how following the right steps will lead to the right path. Motivation I believe comes from within us. Others can help us but in the end it is you who has to make the choice for his or her actions and problems. If you can motivate others thats great, but if you motivate yourself you have the concept and the right thinking.

  35. What are some roadblocks to your success and how can you overcome them?
Roadblocks could be getting fired from a job, not passing a class, or even losing a loved of close person. There is a defining moment in all of our lives and tons of problems we go through it's simply how we deal with them. Do you stash them in the corner, or attack it head on and deal with them at the moment and not in the future. So far there have been a couple speed bumps in my journey but no big road blocks, But if you look out for yourself and others you love you will be fine.

  36. Hello my name is Steven Ramirez I am 19 years old I and I am starting my first semester of college, I am a San Diagen born and raised and have lived in the same house for the entirety of my life. I attended Valhalla high school with a home school hybrid program, though my senior year I strictly attended Valhalla. I am the third oldest of five children, despite having four other children in my family only one of them is my biological sister but despite this I consider all of them my family and I would not have my family any other way.

I came to Cuyamaca strait from high school with a hope to get my general education out of the way and then transfer to San Diego State University. I am currently undecided on my major, though I have been considering a business major due to an interest in a career as a property manager this is a job where I can hopefully achieve the sort of freedom that I am looking for in a career. I am taking this class to get a jump start on collage and discover some new ways to study and learn, and maybe even learning a little about my self and my personality along the way.

  37. Hi my name is Michelle Roberts and I am a 22 year old college student at Grossmont and Cuyamaca. I work as a teacher's aide for Taproot Montessori Preschool and I have children 2-3 years old in my room. I love my job, but I am going to college to become a high school math teacher. I recently celebrated my first wedding anniversary with my husband, Travis. We haven't started a family yet and we are both going to college for our careers; he wants to go to the police academy. Right now we live with my family and we are saving for a home of our own. My personal interests are reading, going out with my friends, and spending time with my family.

  38. For my education, I have been working towards my two year degree in mathematics so I can transfer to SDSU and gain my four year degree and teaching credential in math as well. I took some time the last two semesters to earn my twelve Early Childhood Education units so I could leave my job in retail and move towards my chosen path as teacher; at preschool I have an opportunity to educate and to learn from my master teachers. I chose to take this course because it is online and I needed a course that fits to my time schedule since I work part time and have four other classes this semsester.

  39. Hello, My name is Christine Metzler. My education has not exactly gone as I had hoped or planned. I had graduated high school with honors and was excepted to my second and third choice universities. Knowing that I would be able to transfer to BYU, where I really wanted to go, I chose to go to BYU-Idaho in order to transfer with ease. I was having a hard time convincing myself that this was the right choice for me, as my mom had been sick with cancer since my sophomore year- I couldnt bear the thought of leaving to Idaho and leaving her and my family behind. Shortly after I had graduated high school, she had passed away. Though all of the sorrow, I knew there was no way that I would be able to move that far away. This is how I ended up at community college. I am 22yrs now and through many not so great circumstances, I am still not ready to transfer to BYU. I am more motivated now and am hopeful to rewrite this sad story into a story of a successful future.
